The General in the Gym, Part 2

Was back in the gym first thing today (by “first thing” I mean “before coming to work” because work has a way of sucking me in). Did 10 warmup minutes on the treadmill, then about 50 minutes of lifting, then 20 minutes of cardio on the treadmill. I am taking the advice of the researchers who, for several years now, have said that working out at 60-70% of your max heart rate burns a much higher percentage of fat than working out at a balls-to-the-wall pace. This is good for me, because a) it prevents wear and tear on my joints, which are apparently made of porcelain, and b) it’s easier.

I have a bad right heel, a surgically repaired right knee, a surgically repaired right elbow, and a lower back that gets tweaked often, usually on the right side. I figure, if I ever have a stroke, I’ll at least be used to the whole one-side-works-and-the-other-side-doesn’t thing.

Email Josh (I probably can't win, but I'm still trying like hell.)

I somehow managed to pull myself together and make it back for the second day in a row as well. I could only run a little over a mile today (due to sore feet that are not used to running) and walked 3 miles. I felt pretty good — but I know tomorrow is the first day of pain. But after the next few days, I’ll be shittin’ in the tall cotton.

Plus, I got a massager-thingy for X-mas, so I’m ready for the pain.

I did have one major problem heading into today, and that was a little inside-the-thigh chappage. I used Vaseline for a bit to sooth it, but that plan was ended early by my 1 1/2 year old Boxer, Clementine, whom I learned today thinks Vaseline is delicious, as she ate 3/4 of a container of it.

I have 30 minutes before I get on the tredmill and have a round with the light weights.

    Damn.

Wow. I have no idea what “shittin’ in the tall cotton” means, but I’m assuming it’s something a person wants to be doing.

I did legs yesterday and I’m sore, but it’s bearable. No squatting for me for at least a couple weeks, until my legs learn that atrophy is no longer the norm.

A solid half hour of running and the old 3 exercises x 3 sets x 10 reps for biceps and shoulders. 20 pounds is a lot heavier than I remember. I pushed myself but didn’t over-do it. Keeping it up on a daily basis will be tough.
